- Many students were at the grade 9 "Blitz" day catching up on missing work with Mr. Jasik
- Students who were in class looked at examples of past student poems
- We worked on their "I Am" poems for their poetry wall project and then completed and edited the other poems from the list.
- We also discussed progress on the novel study.
- Parents/guardians and students are reminded that students should be reading 10 minutes every night and recording the reading on the reading log.
- Half the period will be spent working on the final rough copies of poems (good copies to be completed later this week).
- The second half of the class will be in the computer lab completely the SCDSB school climate survey.
- Nelson Literacy - pg. 48 - read script for "Boutique" a concerned children's advertiser's PSA that is connected to the Dove Real Beauty campaign we wrote paragraphs about. Read the script and answer the questions. Hand in.
- Watch Youtube video of the "Boutique" PSA.
- Discuss "Analyzing Media Elements" - different kinds of ads and persuasive techniques.

- small groups: look at the prologue from the play. Identify the words in it that relate to "love" and then in a different colour highlighter identify the words that have to do with "hate" - which are there more of? love or hate?
- Homework tonight: make sure to finish "perfect mate " sheet (you AND your parent/guardian must fill it out).
Oct. 22nd - Finish R&J word search and hand in
- Take up perfect mate sheets (chart paper in class - co-construct information).
- Final thought: If you and your parents/guardians want similar qualities in a mate for yourself, why do you disagree so much when it comes time to date someone? We will explore this idea in Romeo & Juliet as the main characters have a similar problem, although a bit more extreme.
- Opening scene of the play - it's a fight scene. Read pgs. 7-18 in the graphic novel.

Sept. 11th - Paragraph writing practise: "Does school start too early?" rough copy
- Lesson: adding transition words into our writing
- Take up and hand in "Surprising Stories about Sound" worksheet
- Homework: finish first draft of "does school start too early" paragraph
Sept. 12th - Edit and hand in "does school start too early"? good copy (hand written)
- Highlight and identify elements of a complex paragraph
- Topic #2: "Should schools ban cell phones" - write a proper paragraph
(homework if not completed during class time).
Sept. 13th - Complete & hand in two paragraphs: "Does school start too early" and "Should
schools ban cell phones?"
- Copy the example provided of a proper paragraph. Identify the elements of a proper
paragraph (topic sentence, points & details, transition words & concluding
sentence) by highlighting or underlining the parts of the paragraph.
- Nelson Literacy textbook: review "short story elements" pgs. 18-19.
Read the short story "Lather and Nothing Else" pgs. 20-25. Answer the responding questions on a lined piece of paper. BOOKS do NOT go home this weekend, we will
finish any incomplete work on Monday in class.

Welcome parents and students to Grade 9 Applied English at Nottawasaga Pines.
This course is designed to develop the key oral communication, reading, writing, and media literacy skills students need for success in secondary school and daily life.
Students will read, interpret, and create a variety of informational, literary, and graphic texts. An important focus will be on identifying and using appropriate strategies and processes to improve students’ comprehension of texts and to help them communicate clearly and effectively.
The course is intended to prepare students for the Grade 10 Applied English course, which leads to College or Workplace preparation courses in Grades 11 & 12.
